#WINDOWS 3.1 DOSBOX INSTALL#
In order to use this device, we’ll need to install a Sound Blaster driver in Windows 3.1. Installing Sound DriversĭOSBox can emulate several sound devices, including the widely-compatible Sound Blaster 16. We need to install sound and video drivers to get the most out of the Windows 3.1 experience. At this point Windows should load successfully, but without sound. To launch Windows, type cd windows to change to the Windows directory, then type win to start Windows. Once the Windows 3.1 setup is complete, select Reboot, then start DOSBox again. DOSBox will quit, so you’ll have to start it back up. Just choose “None of the above” and continue with the installation. If you still have DOOM installed from the first post in this series, you may be promted to select the application name for C:\DOOM\DM.EXE. When prompted to install a printer, select the generic/text printer. Once Windows starts you’ll need to enter a user name. Installing WindowsĪssuming you have already installed and configured DOSBox, start it up, put the Windows 3.1 CD into your optical drive, and switch to the D: drive in DOSBox to run setup.exe. If you don’t have a copy of Windows 3.1, you’ll need to buy it somehow. You could also put the Windows files into a folder such as C:\DOSBox\WinInstall instead of using a CD-R (you’ll have to adapt the instructions below if you do). I can remember creating graphics in Paintbrush, playing Solitaire and Minesweeper, listening to audio CDs using the CD-ROM (we didn’t have a CD player back then), and of course playing Windows games (my favorite was King’s Quest VI Enhanced on CD-ROM).ĭOSBox does not emulate Windows 3.1 by itself, but Windows 3.1x can be installed in DOSBox. Fortunately I still had a copy of my parents’ Windows 3.1 floppy disks that I was able to transfer to a CD-R for easier access on my PC (I don’t even have a floppy drive in my desktop PC anymore). It had MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 on its 160MB HDD. If anyone can append to that info, that would be great. My family’s first computer was an AST desktop with an Intel 486SX 25Mhz processor and 4MB of RAM that my parents purchased when I was in grade school.
#WINDOWS 3.1 DOSBOX HOW TO#
I don't know HOW to switch to a different floppy image file after the first one loads and then prompts to load the next disk. Then choose the drive letter you want associated with that drive. A file path line opens up below it, there you just find the image file you want to open by selecting the file open icon to the right. In the drop-down menu for Type, select Floppy Image. Right click in blank space under Folder/Image and click Add. With D-Fend Reloaded, you just go to Drives in a profile. If DB has this option, I haven't a clue where it's at. I couldn't figure out how to swap disks with it.

I tried running an installer that required multiple floppy disks and the installer crapped out with some error. I was able to get DB to read floppy image files, but it can be buggy. It has a section for Drives so you can set up floppies, HDD's etc. You can use it to set up profiles and it does make it much easier to start some games. D-Fend R is a frontend whcih accesses all of Dosbox's functions plus has extra features. You can also use D-Fend Reloaded to run Dosbox.

Mplayer, Minesweeper, Paint etc.pretty cool look back in time. It even comes with all those old Win 3.11 programs. But it does get you right into Win 3.11 WITH working sound. You can always edit the cycles if something isn't running right. I mounted the CD ROM drive and have installed other Win 3.11 games in there. You don't have to use that JUST for Sim tower. Dosbox started and then soon Windows 3.11 was on the screen, as well as the Sim Tower window. 7z file to a new folder and then ran the. But when I downloaded Sim Tower from gamesnostalgia, it came inside a copy of Windows 3.11 and already packaged with Dosbox 0.74. I know this doesn't exactly answer your last question as I haven't tried to install Windows 3.11 itself. Skip to the last 2 paragraph for how I open floppy image files (or try to).
